Inclusion of the rescue chain founders in the «Swiss Supply Chain Hall of Fame»

The Swiss Logistics Foundation is pleased to announce the posthumous admission of the 17th and 18th members, Arthur Bill and Peter Bieder, to its SWISS SUPPLY CHAIN HALL OF FAME to announce.

The idea for the Swiss rescue chain came to Arthur Bill, the delegate for disaster relief abroad, during an emergency relief operation in southern Italy. Together with Peter Bieder, the then director of the Swiss Army's Federal Office for Air Protection Troops, an instrument was developed that combines all the elements necessary for a successful rescue operation: namely location, rescue (salvage), emergency medicine (supply), material logistics and transport logistics, i.e All facets of logistics/supply chain. Together, central foundations were laid for the most urgent logistics in the most difficult environment from Switzerland to the world, in terms of deadlines, and many lives were saved as a result.

Arthur Bill (1916-2011)

After training as a primary school teacher, Arthur Bill worked in the Bernese school system from 1937 to 1947. At the beginning of the Second World War he trained as a military pilot and later became a colonel in the general staff and chief of staff in the air force. Since 1947, Arthur Bill has been involved in various children's and social organizations. In 1972 he was appointed the first delegate for disaster relief abroad by the Swiss Federal Council. Within a short time he built up a volunteer corps and led its first missions in southern Europe, Africa, Asia and Central and South America. Until 1981, Arthur Bill was also head of the humanitarian aid department of the Swiss Agency for Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid (DEH, today: SDC). After retiring, he took on voluntary work in national and international humanitarian organizations, for example for the disaster relief corps or as a special representative of the Federal Department of Foreign Affairs (FDFA) and within the framework of the peacekeeping operations of the United Nations.

Peter Bieder (1939 –2008)

During his time as Director of the Federal Office for Air Protection Troops (today Rescue Troops) and Chief of Weapons from January 1, 1988 to December 31, 1995, Peter Bieder significantly shaped our current rescue troops. He has turned the rescue troops into a powerful force that has proven itself in many operations at home and abroad. Brigadier Peter Bieder had campaigned with great commitment for the air raid protection troops. He was a weapons chief and professional officer who led in an exemplary manner, gave enthusiastic training and, as an educator, always placed people at the center.

Peter Bieder has uniquely succeeded in building the foundation for today's rescue troops. His commitment to help build the Swiss rescue chain with the members of the air raid/rescue troops as rescuers abroad was immense and tireless. Because of his enormous experience, he was elected to the extra-parliamentary commission for military operations to promote international peace in 2004. This body advises the foreign and defense departments in making decisions on international missions. Peter Bieder died during a humanitarian mission.
